Week 2 Summary

1. Chapter 3: A Thoughtful Space: Movement and Composition Reading Synopsis:

This chapter begins by talking about the different principles and elements of design and how they are used to direct the viewer’s eye over a picture plane. The elements of design are Line, Tone/Value, Color, Texture, Shape, Form, Space, Balance, Pattern, Emphasis/Hierarchy, Scale/Proportion, Contrast/Similarity, Unity, and Emphasis. The chapter then goes on to explain how these principles and elements are used in conjunction to create animated works.

2. Animation Samples Synopsis: 1928-1939 (Pick one and write a brief summary of what you found interesting and how it relates to your aesthetic)

An animation that I found interesting was Betty Boop: Minnie The Moocher. I found this animation interesting because of how the animators use personified objects to tell the story. This is used to tell the viewer more about how Betty Boop sees things without literally saying it.

3. Interview Reading Synopsis: Max Hattler

The Interview begins with a brief summary of Max Hatler’s work. Hatler uses animation to create short films, VR work, and audiovisual live performances. When Hatler was asked how his work relates to fine art traditions he said that his work draws influence from contemporary culture and historical influences. Later in the interview, Hatler talks about how his interest in animation comes from drawing and painting as a kid. He later became interested in computers, and soon realized that his two passions could be combined through the creation of animations.
